Cleaning Laminate Floors

Laminate floors are popular because they’re so easy to install, and they can float right on top of existing flooring. Typically, laminate floorboards are made of a few layers of different materials that all serve their own purpose. Cleaning laminate is relatively easy, but there are some things to avoid so that it stays beautiful. We’ve compiled some helpful guidelines for the task.

Mopping

Laminate only needs to be mopped every once in a while; mostly, you should just be sweeping and wiping up spills as they happen. When it does come time for a deep clean, there are specific rules for laminate that don’t apply to other surfaces. A traditional wet mop made of yarn will hold way too much water, and that might cause the floors to warp in the long run. The best tool is a damp microfiber mop. Laminate also doesn’t like abrasive cleaning tools because they scratch its surface. That includes vacuums with rotating brushes meant to aid in carpet cleaning.

Products

Remember how we said laminate is so easy to install? That is partly because it comes from the store with all the sealant and all the shine that you could want. To keep the floors as beautiful as they are on installation day, never use oil-based cleaners. They will leave behind a gunky residue. Laminate cleaners are OK, but you only need a small amount to do the job.

If all else fails, consult the manufacturer instructions that came with the floors or do some digging on their website. They usually do a great job of letting consumers know how to make their floors last.

Refreshing Laminate

If your laminate floors feel sticky or look a bit worse for the wear, then there are ways to restore some of their luster with a simple cleaning. Mix a gallon of hot water with a cup of white vinegar. Grab your microfiber mop and dampen it in your homemade cleaning solution. Mop as you usually would, and allow the floors to try. The vinegar is a fantastic cleaning agent that will break down any waxy buildup from cleaning products’ past.
